Tablescapes That Set the Tone

Head table draped in emerald velvet with taper candles and deep red florals before a frescoed wall

A tablescape is the first thing your guests experience up close. It tells them how the evening will feel before the first toast.

Start with color

Choose a palette of two or three tones and let one lead. Deep emerald with candlelight and crimson florals feels dramatic and warm. Soft neutrals feel calm and airy.

Layer texture

Velvet, linen, glass, silver and brass each catch light differently. Mixing them gives a table depth without making it busy.

Let light do the work

Taper candles and votives at different heights create warmth and movement. In a historic or dimly lit venue, candlelight can be the entire design.

Vary your florals

Combine tall and low arrangements so sightlines stay open for conversation. Choose blooms that echo the palette, and add a few unexpected shapes for interest.

Add personal details

Menu cards, place cards and napkin treatments are small moments that make guests feel considered.

Consider the room

The best tablescape belongs to its space. Architecture, ceiling height and natural light should shape the design. At Villa Corsini in Florence, the fresco-lined walls did half the work, so the tables could stay rich but restrained.
